Choosing a web development company is one of those decisions that's easy to get wrong quietly. The website looks fine at launch, and it's only months later — when you need a simple change made, or the site slows down under real traffic — that the cracks show.
Look Past the Portfolio
A polished portfolio tells you an agency can design well, but it doesn't tell you how they'll handle your project specifically. Ask about the process behind two or three of their past projects: how requirements were gathered, what happened when the scope changed mid-project, and how long support lasted after launch.
Ask About the Technology, Not Just the Result
Two websites can look identical while being built completely differently underneath. Ask what platform or framework they're proposing and why it fits your situation — a WordPress site and a custom Laravel application solve different problems, and a good agency should be able to explain that trade-off in plain language rather than defaulting to whatever they always build.
Understand What Happens After Launch
A website is not a one-time deliverable. Ask directly: who fixes something if it breaks, how are updates handled, and is there a maintenance plan. Agencies that treat launch as the finish line, rather than the start of an ongoing relationship, tend to leave clients stranded exactly when they need support most.
Get the Communication Process in Writing
Before signing anything, clarify how often you'll get updates, who your main point of contact is, and what the escalation path looks like if something goes wrong. Vague answers here are usually a preview of how the project will actually run.
Choosing well up front costs a little more time during evaluation — but it saves considerably more time and money than discovering the wrong fit six months into a project.
